Top Ten Tuesday

It's time for Top Ten Tuesday - this week's Top Ten is:
Top Ten "Older" Books You Don't Want People To Forget About

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

This week's list could be any backlist books but with it being Banned Books Week, I'm going to go a bit farther back in time and pick 10 books that are Banned & Challenged- 5 Classics  and 5 newer titles - that I don't want people to forget about (i.e., you should read them):

  1. The Awakening by Kate Chopin
This was first published in 1899 and I had to read it for school but it's one of my favorites - classic or otherwise.

  2. Animal Farm by George Orwell
Another 'for school' read but one that I think should be read even if it's not part of your required reading.

  3. Lord of the Flies by William Goulding
Apparently this is a book girls aren't supposed to like? Glad no one told me this before I read it because I did quite like it. (And I didn't actually read it for my school but to help someone else - not sure how that counts.)

  4. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Does this one really need a reason? I doubt anyone would forget about it but . . . you might forget to actually read it.

  5. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
/.^.\ Can you have Banned Books Week and not read this book?

  6. My Brother Sam Is Dead by James Lincoln Collier
This one was a school read, too - from middle school maybe? - but I love it so, so much. I should probably blame it for my historical fiction love.

  7. Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause
I LOVE this book. I liked the movie but if you've seen the movie, do read the book - they're vastly different. (And it's odd, too, because I read this book thinking how easily it could be a movie . . . then the movie was nothing like the book.)

  8. Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
A book that I can read for school (in two schools) and still love it . . .

  9. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D Taylor
I'm starting to think only school books got challenged . . .

  10. The Face on the Milk Carton series by Caroline B Cooney
I'm obviously forgetting anything ban/challenge worthy in this series, but it was a fun read.

*I keep picture Effie Trinket (of The Hunger Games one of 2010 & 2011's most challenged books) welcoming everyone to/wishing everyone a great Banned Books Week with Guy Montag standing behind - and of to the side - of her, at the ready . . .

  1. LOVE everything by Caroline B Cooney. My favorite series of hers was the "Loosing Christina" trilogy (though it wasn't called that when I read them).

  3. I've only read a few of these. I should probably look into the rest of them, huh? And lol! Now I'm totally picturing Effie too!
