SBBS: Day 18 ~ Marjetta Geerling

Spring Break Blog Spectacular ~ Marjetta Geerling

Today's guest is Marjetta Geerling! Her debut, 2008 novel Fancy White Trash is probably one of my all-time favorite books - you can see my review here - and I'm so happy to have a guest blog from her today. Info about Fancy White Trash and her new book, out later this year, at the end of the post.

Guest Blog:

When I agreed to write about Spring Break, I thought it would be so easy. I mean, I’m a YA writer. I have tons of great Spring Break memories, right?

Wrong. So wrong. What this prompt brought to my attention is that I spent most of my Spring Breaks either working extra hours, catching up on things that needed doing, or being sick. Can it be true? Is that the total of my Spring Break memories?

Thank you, Facebook, you container of all things past, present, and future, for reminding me that no, there was one very special Spring Break. In an album I put together after cleaning out boxes from under my bed, I found this picture:

Who is that girl in the baggy purple sweatshirt with the wild hair? That’s me, senior year of high school, with my best friends. The year is…ahem…1991. My best friend, Colleen, and her family always spent a week at Doheny Beach, CA. That year, Colleen invited me to go with them. I was beyond thrilled. I not-so-secretly wanted to be adopted by her family. An entire week at Doheny with them was a dream come true.

It wasn’t exactly what I’d expected. There was a sewage spill that made it so we couldn’t go in the water most of the week. The smell was, well, sewage-y. It didn’t matter to me, though, especially not when I got to spend my seventeenth birthday away from home with my friends and adopted family.

To be honest, a lot of that week is now a blur. I don’t remember what flavor my birthday cake was. The only present I remember is the pink crystal bedside lamp my boyfriend, Damian, gave me. (I know, not a traditionally romantic gift, but it was perfect for me.) The weather was cool enough that I needed that giant sweatshirt, but warm enough that apparently I didn’t feel the need to wear shorts with it. I remember eating a lot, laughing, and snuggling with Damian.

What exactly made that Spring Break so special? Belonging. I felt like part of Colleen’s family. I felt treasured by my friends and adored by my boyfriend. It was a taste of what my life would be like when I went out on my own, and I thought it was delicious.

About Fancy White Trash:
Finding love is simple with the One True Love Plan. ?If only life were as easy as your sisters.? Abby?s heard that one before. And it?s true ?Shelby and Kait aren?t exactly prim and proper. Abby is determined not to follow in their footsteps, so she has created the One True Love Plan. The most important part of the plan is Rule #1: Find Someone New. This means finding a guy who hasn?t already dated Shelby or Kait. But when Abby starts falling for the possible father of Kait?s baby, she has to figure out if some rules are meant to be broken.

This debut novel, a modern comedy of errors, is as lighthearted and irreverant as its title.

  1. Belonging....yes, this really is what it comes down to. Without someone to show they care we can really end up in a rut.
